PUBLIC
INVITED TO OPENING OF MUSEUM OF TEXAS ARTS
A
new museum of Texas Arts is scheduled for an opening reception on May 22nd
from 4 to 6 pm. The public is invited to tour the lower floor of the museum
that is located in the 1890’s King Russell House at 1425 University Avenue
in Huntsville, Texas.
The
museum property along with three additional historic properties is being
donated to The Ethician Foundation by George and Sue Russell, which
received its 501 (c) 3 status from the IRS on May 8, 2014 as an “Operating
Foundation”. With that designation comes the right to receive tax
deductible gifts of art objects or monies that can be used for the
operation of the museum.
This
initial donation to the foundation is the first step in designating all
twelve historic properties between Sam Houston State University and the
downtown square as a National Historic District under the auspices of The
National Park Service and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The
opening is timed to coincide with the 69th birthday of George Russell who
hopes that the museum and future historic district will be a positive economic
engine to draw tourists to Huntsville and enhance the city’s reputation as
a center of culture and educational opportunities.
Another
goal of the foundation’s board of directors is for the historic parts of
Huntsville to be made more pedestrian friendly, especially the two block
area between 14th and 16th Streets on University Avenue.
The Ethician Foundation will serve
not only to enhance historic preservation and the arts but will, along with
The Universal Ethician Church help to manage and maintain four “green
cemeteries” covering 300 acres of wilderness as well as the current 25
wildlife sanctuaries and botanical preserves on the shores of Lake
Livingston that are protected under perpetual conservation easements held
by The Texas Land Conservancy and the Texas Native Prairie Association.
